Kim Lee Does Other People's Taxes
A downloadable game postmortem
[DISCLAIMER]: LITERALLY UNPLAYABLE! This game requires a proprietary face tracking software which we, the creators, only had a temporary trial license to. We therefore no longer have a working build of this game to be made available for download. Instead, see this page as a mere description of what this game once was, which we hope can act as a source of inspiration for future developers.
BUT... The original art assets created for the game as well as all news events can be downloaded below.
Made during Fall Game Jam 2017, organized by LiU Game Jam, based on the themes Flat Abuse and Speedy Cactus.
Kim Lee does his other people's taxes, or more accurately, he checks them.
Step into the shoes of Kim Lee, a state-employed tax administrator loyal to the Great Leader. Every day, Kim does his best to meet the quotas expected of him as he checks whether people have payed the taxes required of them or not. Too little and their submitted income tax return should be denied. Too much and... ACCEPT THEM OF COURSE! The Great Leader could always make use of more money. But Kim should be careful. For each denied correct or... "more than correct" submission, his standing with the Great Leader will be lowered and their suspicion of him raised. Likewise for each accepted incorrect submission.
As this is going on, the TV on his desk is on. The TV is ALWAYS on, feeding Kim with news about the state and the Great Leader. And these are not news that can be ignored. The Great Leader is always watching you (yes you, the player, through your webcam) detecting your every reaction to the news by determining your facial expressions. Reacting inappropriately to the news? Frowning as the Great Leader celebrates his birthday or smiling when the Great Leader gets hurt? This will lower Kim's standing and raise suspicion of him.
All of this is a facade however. Kim is actually a member of the resistance and his job and reactions are only covers, but covers with real risks of him getting him killed if blown.
The actual goal Kim needs to achieve can only be discerned by inspecting what is under his desk: a clipboard on which he keeps track of the number of politicians he needs to kill, a bomb with which to do so by mailing it and an instruction book on how one actually assembles a bomb without accidentally killing oneself with it in the process.
To kill off all politicians before he get's himself executed, Kim needs to finish as many bombs as possible. Each bomb needs to be wired in a different way and to know how, Kim must check the instruction book. While looking into the book however, it is easy to loose track of both the time until the end of the work day and the news that need to be reacted to.
Can Kim balance making bombs while meeting his work quotas and appearing loyal to the Great Leader?
...
Most likely not. The game is was very difficult.
